C：取り巻きの良し悪しで、一国の運命が変わることだってあるのにさ。

Torimaki

Mr. A: Shachoo no torimaki-renchuu niwa komatta mono dane. Jijitsu o ioo to shinain dakara.
Mr. B: Honto dayo. Kono kaisha mo anna renchuu ni gyuuji rarete irunde wa abunai mon dayo.
Mr. C: Torimaki no yoshiashi de ikkoku no unmet ga kawaru koto datte arunoni sa.

Mr. A: It's a problem the president being surrounded by those toadies the way he is. He never gets to hear the truth about anything.
Mr. B: And it's dangerous for the company, as well, being under the thumb of a crowd like that.
Mr. C: Yes, destinies of nations have been changed by such people.

"Torimaki" is always used pejoratively for the fawning toadies, hangers on and "yes men" who surround a leader, pandering to his every whim and allowing only favorable news to reach his ears. Convinced that all is going well, he may find himself in serious trouble before he realizes what is happening and there are many examples of this in ancient Roman and Chinese history.
