しげる：ちょっと敷居が高いな。卒業以来、手紙一本書いていないんだ。

Shikii ga Takai

Keiko: Raigetsu, Shimizu sensei no ie de, kookoojidai no doosookai wo suru no. Anata mo irrasharu de sho.
Shigeru: Chotto shikii ga takai na. Sotsugyoo irai, tegami ippon kaite inain' da.

The threshold is high.

Keiko: There's a high school class reunion being held next month at Mr. Shimizu's home. You'll be going too, of course.
Shigeru: I don't think I could even walk through the front door. I haven't written him a single letter since graduating.

Keiko and Shigeru are graduates of the same class at high school. Keiko has suggested that Shigeru should also attend the reunion but he is somewhat hesitant. He has not bothered to keep in touch with Mr. Shimizu so even the thought of setting foot inside the house of his former teacher causes him much embarrassment.
When neglect of a friend or benefactor makes one feel ashamed to cross the threshold of his home, the expression "shikii ga takai" ("the threshold is high") is commonly used.
